Phil Chartrukian stood fuming in the Sys-Sec lab. Strathmore's words echoed in his head: Leave now! That's an order! He kicked the trash can and swore in the empty lab. â€Å"Diagnostic, my ass! Since when does the deputy director bypass Gauntlet's filters!?† The Sys-Secs were well paid to protect the computer systems at the NSA, and Chartrukian had learned that there were only two job requirements: be utterly brilliant and exhaustively paranoid. Hell, he cursed, this isn't paranoia! The fucking Run-Monitor's reading eighteen hours! It was a virus. Chartrukian could feel it. There was little doubt in his mind what was going on: Strathmore had made a mistake by bypassing Gauntlet's filters, and now he was trying to cover it up with some half-baked story about a diagnostic. Chartrukian wouldn't have been quite so edgy had TRANSLTR been the only concern. But it wasn't. Despite its appearance, the great decoding beast was by no means an island. Although the cryptographers believed Gauntlet was constructed for the sole purpose of protecting their code-breaking masterpiece, the Sys-Secs understood the truth. The Gauntlet filters served a much higher god. The NSA's main databank. The history behind the databank's construction had always fascinated Chartrukian. Despite the efforts of the Department of Defense to keep the Internet to themselves in the late 1970s, it was too useful a tool not to attract the public-sector. Eventually universities pried their way on. Shortly after that came the commercial servers. The floodgates opened, and the public poured in. By the early 90's, the government's once-secure â€Å"Internet† was a congested wasteland of public E-mail and cyberporn. Following a number of unpublicized, yet highly damaging computer infiltrations at the Office of Naval Intelligence, it became increasingly clear that government secrets were no longer safe on computers connected to the burgeoning Internet. The President, in conjunction with the Department of Defense, passed a classified decree that would fund a new, totally secure government network to replace the tainted Internet and function as a link between U.S. intelligence agencies. To prevent further computer pilfering of government secrets, all sensitive data was relocated to one, highly secure location-the newly constructed NSA databank-the Fort Knox of U.S. intelligence data. Literally millions of the country's most classified photos, tapes, documents, and videos were digitized and transferred to the immense storage facility and then the hard copies were destroyed. The databank was protected by a triple-layer power relay and a tiered digital backup system. It was also 214 feet underground to shield it from magnetic fields and possible explosions. Activities within the control room were designated Top Secret Umbra†¦ the country's highest level of security. The secrets of the country had never been safer. This impregnable databank now housed blueprints for advanced weaponry, witness protection lists, aliases of field agents, detailed analyses and proposals for covert operations. The list was endless. There would be no more black-bag jobs damaging U.S. intelligence. Of course, the officers of the NSA realized that stored data had value only if it was accessible. The real coup of the databank was not getting the classified data off the streets, it was making it accessible only to the correct people. All stored information had a security rating and, depending on the level of secrecy, was accessible to government officials on a compartmentalized basis. A submarine commander could dial in and check the NSA's most recent satellite photos of Russian ports, but he would not have access to the plans for an anti-drug mission in South America. CIA analysts could access histories of known assassins but could not access launch codes reserved for the President. Sys-Secs, of course, had no clearance for the information in the databank, but they were responsible for its safety. Like all large databanks-from insurance companies to universities-the NSA facility was constantly under attack by computer hackers trying to sneak a peek at the secrets waiting inside. But the NSA security programmers were the best in the world. No one had ever come close to infiltrating the NSA databank-and the NSA had no reason to think anybody ever would. Inside the Sys-Sec lab, Chartrukian broke into a sweat trying to decide whether to leave. Trouble in TRANSLTR meant trouble in the databank too. Strathmore's lack of concern was bewildering. Everyone knew that TRANSLTR and the NSA main databank were inextricably linked. Each new code, once broken, was fired from Crypto through 450 yards of fiber-optic cable to the NSA databank for safe keeping. The sacred storage facility had limited points of entry-and TRANSLTR was one of them. Gauntlet was supposed to be the impregnable threshold guardian. And Strathmore had bypassed it. Chartrukian could hear his own heart pounding. TRANSLTR's been stuck eighteen hours! The thought of a computer virus entering TRANSLTR and then running wild in the basement of the NSA proved too much. â€Å"I've got to report this,† he blurted aloud. In a situation like this, Chartrukian knew there was only one person to call: the NSA's senior Sys-Sec officer, the short-fused, 400-pound computer guru who had built Gauntlet. His nickname was Jabba. He was a demigod at the NSA-roaming the halls, putting out virtual fires, and cursing the feeblemindedness of the inept and the ignorant. Chartrukian knew that as soon as Jabba heard Strathmore had bypassed Gauntlet's filters, all hell would break loose. Too bad, he thought, I've got a job to do. He grabbed the phone and dialed Jabba's twenty-four-hour cellular.

A series of Congress’ and Conferences impacted the political and cultural dealings within Europe. However, it was not necessarily the meetings themselves that drew political conflict, but rather the re- charting of territories that eventually led to conflict, and which even today still garners a small amount of sectional tension. The Congress of Vienna was designed to resolve a series of set issues affecting almost all of Europe. Stemming from the previous defeat of Napoleonic France, which meant redrawing the boundary lines; however, the outcome ended up being extremely unpopular (mostly in France). Included in the Congress were Britain, Austria, Prussia, France, and Russia. These allies could not come to a major decision. While their goal was to draw the least amount of protest as possible, they were forced to bring in both Talleyrand and Spain’s Marquis of Labrador. This was later seen as the Congress’ greatest mistake. However, during the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, real change began to happen. Basically, the goal of the conference was to negotiate a series of set peace treaties that had been introduced by the Allied and by the Associated Powers and the Central Powers. All of these treaties became the groundwork for what later became known as the Versailles-Washington System. However, since the world map was revised to a certain degree during these conferences, many of those involved in the middle became somewhat hostile and embittered. This would eventually lead to World War II. The European conflicts of 1919 affect politics in Europe today, especially in regards to the former Holy Roman Empire. Many problems, resulting from boundary lines and various ethnic groups are in the Central European region. For example, while a series of German provinces existed east of the Oder-Neisse line, which were subsequently lost and annexed via the People’s Republic of Poland and later the Soviet Union, they were also ethnically cleaned from Germans through the national as well as communist forces. This is just one of many examples of the problems associated with the Central European Region. Drawing on outside sources, looking at a map of this area makes it easy to see why the political air was tumultuous after these conferences. For example, while the concept of Central Europe varies from nation to nation, most agree that it includes Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Switzerland (among others. ) It was usually seen as overwhelmingly conservative, as well as Catholic, which was a huge difference between its neighbors, who were seen as fairly liberal, being influenced by the French Revolution. Swords are being raised, grenades are being launched, and battalions are being activated. What aim do our aggressors pursue? What is the flag flown in this frightful fight? The bloody battle being waged against hard-working Americans everywhere is the most outrageous and troubling issue facing our generation†¦ The War on Christmas. The War on Christmas is just the next scheme on the liberal agenda attempting to turn us all into atheist, sexually immoral deviants. However, in recent years, they have escalated this ambush on Christmas spirit to an unprecedented extreme. At this point, the forced removal of Christ from the holiday season is the most preposterous violation of liberty in this nation’s history. Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached a juncture at which the Christmas season lasts only from November 1st to December 25th. I know- despicable. The War on Christmas is a threat to Christians everywhere. PC-police and social justice warriors are attempting to bring about a world in which we say â€Å"happy holidays† instead of â€Å"merry christmas;† a world in which Starbucks cups are merely red and green for a few weeks- with no sign of Christ, a tree, or Santa Claus on the entire cup. Where is our love for religion? Where is our dedication to Christian values? Where is our deeply held belief in Santa Claus, Rudolph, and that little New Year’s Baby? Obama has even renamed the White House Christmas tree the â€Å"Holiday Tree.† Why must they target Christmas? I hold that Christmas remains the primary target of all grinches because it is objectively and undoubtedly the best holiday of all time. Our assailants know that they must defeat us by attempting to abait our Christmas cheer, by attempting to destroy our love of mistletoe, and by attempting to remove our favorite carols from malls across America. But we can withstand this injustice no longer. It is time to launch back with all of our effort, spirit, and stamina. It is time to muster all of our strength and defend the true Christmas spirit. For this reason, I’ve drawn up a modest proposal for a counterattack in the heart wrenching War on Christmas. I propose that we pass a national law mandating an extension of the Christmas season to 365 days per year. You heard me right, folks. I am proposing a year-round celebration of Christmas. Every mall in the United States will echo with Christmas carols 24/7, spurring on Christmas gift shopping. Every home will be decorated with a fragrant, beautiful pine tree in its living room. Santa Clauses will be set up on every corner, and ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas will become ABC Family’s 365 Days of Christmas. Even better, federal law will require a detailed depiction of the crucifix on each and every grande Starbucks cup. Tall cups will be decorated with a holly wreath, and ventis will display the three wisemen. I suppose that my heartless opponents will attempt to find flaws in my foolproof plan. They may argue that celebrating Christmas all year round diverts attention from lesser-known, less important holidays- that it’s unfair to people who celebrate things like Divalidan or Chanukwanzah. However, Christmas is simply a better holiday, and deserves more attention, joy, and frenzy surrounding it. I know that people of other religions will agree, and eventually, through the constant celebration of Christmas, they will come around to join us. Never fear, dear readers, I have nothing to gain from this proposal. In fact, I am far from having any sort of monetary or power-seeking motive in this endeavor, as I do not celebrate Christmas. The war on Christmas is an inherent violation of our God-given right to shove our religion down everyone else’s throats. Never again will someone tell me â€Å"happy holidays† or to enjoy my â€Å"winter break.† It’s time to take a stand in defense of the Christmas spirit. My fellow Americans, join me in defending your Christian morals. Join me in defending Santa, Rudolph, and Frosty. Join me in celebrating the best movies, songs, and sweaters of all time.
